The Travel Advisor’s

Guide to Royal Caribbean Cruises

A Royal Caribbean cruise is designed to be easy and fun, but a few insider tips can make the experience even smoother. After helping many clients prepare for their Royal Caribbean cruises, these are the tips I consistently share to help trips run smoothly from embarkation day through the final morning onboard.

Whether this is your first cruise or your tenth, a little preparation helps you relax sooner and enjoy more of what the ship and destinations have to offer.

1) Before Your Cruise

Complete Online Check-In Early

Royal Caribbean check-in opens several weeks before sailing in the Royal Caribbean app.

After completing check-in:

• Verify your arrival time at the cruise terminal
• Download your Sail Pass and save a screenshot on your phone

Having this ready can speed up the boarding process significantly.

Reconfirm Your Check-out Time

(About 3 Days Before Sailing)

A few days before your cruise, open the Royal Caribbean app and double-check your check-out time and arrival at the cruise terminal.

Occasionally arrival times adjust slightly, or guests forget which time they originally selected. Taking a quick look about three days before embarkation ensures you arrive at the correct time and avoid unnecessary delays at the terminal.

Check the App for Pre-Cruise Discounts

Many onboard experiences can be reserved before your cruise through the Royal Caribbean app, including:

• Shore excursions
• Specialty dining
• Beverage packages
• Internet packages
• Select onboard activities

Pricing is usually lower before the cruise, and reservations can typically be canceled (up to 48 hours prior) and rebooked if a better promotion appears.

Confirm Flights and Travel Documents

If flying to your cruise port:

• Double-check flight times and seat assignments
• Download your airline app for travel updates
• Take a photo of your passport and store it on your phone as a backup

These small steps can prevent last-minute stress on travel day.

Have a “Trip Prep Night”

A fun way to prepare is to plan a trip prep night before your cruise. Watching ship tours and destination videos together helps everyone understand what to expect and builds excitement before departure.

2) Smart Packing Tips for Royal Caribbean Cruises

Cruise cabins are comfortable but compact. A few items can make them much more functional.

Magnetic Hooks

Cruise ship cabin walls are metal. Strong magnetic hooks are perfect for hanging:

• hats
• swimsuits
• backpacks
• lanyards

This helps keep the cabin organized during the trip.

Charging Electronics

Power strips are not permitted onboard, but multi-port USB wall chargers are allowed and extremely helpful for charging several devices at once.

Because cabins often have limited outlets, this can make a big difference.

Lanyards for SeaPass Cards

Your SeaPass card acts as your:

• stateroom key
• onboard payment method
• boarding pass when leaving and returning to the ship

Many guests find it convenient to keep their SeaPass in a lanyard or card holder. You will receive it in a sealed envelope at your cabin door when it is ready on embarkation day. Usually at 1pm.

Motion Sickness Prevention

Modern cruise ships are very stable, but some travelers still prefer bringing:

• Sea-Bands
• motion sickness medication

Sea-Bands work best when worn before symptoms begin.

Plan Ahead for Caffeine

Coffee drinks and canned soda are available onboard, typically around $4–5 each.

For many travelers, beverage packages only become cost-effective if they plan to consume multiple drinks per day throughout the entire cruise.

You can also bring your own unopened drinks as a carry-on. See here for guidelines.

Avoid International Roaming Charges

Once the ship leaves port, your phone may connect to a maritime cellular network, which can be extremely expensive.

The safest approach is to:

• place phones in Airplane Mode
• use the ship’s Wi-Fi if you choose to purchase an internet package

3) Embarkation Day Tips

Embarkation day is exciting, but also the busiest day on the ship. A few simple strategies can make it much smoother.

Pack a Carry-On Bag

Your stateroom may not be ready until early afternoon.

Carry a small bag with:

• medications
• swimsuits
• sunscreen
• flip flops
• anything needed for the afternoon

Pools, dining, and activities are already open once you board.

Visit Your Muster Station Early

All guests must complete a short safety check at their assigned muster or safety station. This only takes a few minutes and can be completed shortly after boarding.

Register Kids and Teens Early

If traveling with children or teens, visit the youth clubs soon after boarding to complete registration.

Teens especially tend to enjoy the first-night meet-up events, which help them connect with other travelers early in the cruise. Most planned events tend to be after 9pm.

Locate Your Dining Table

Guests with assigned dining times can stop by the Main Dining Room earlier in the day to locate their table.

This allows you to walk directly to your table later while others wait to be seated.

Your table and wait staff remain the same throughout the cruise.

Explore the Ship

The first afternoon is a great time to explore the ship, review the Daily Planner in the Royal Caribbean app, and begin reserving activities like:

• ice skating
• FlowRider
• laser tag and escape rooms
• other limited-capacity activities

Some ships also offer first-day discounts for specialty dining reservations.

4) Enjoying the Ship

Royal Caribbean ships offer a wide variety of activities and entertainment for a wide range of ages and interests.

For the larger shows and productions, it’s best to arrive about 15–20 minutes early to secure good seating.

If you have evening dining reservations and hope to attend a show afterward, your wait staff will often help pace dinner so you can make it in time.

Remember to Use Your Onboard Credit

If I was able to secure onboard credit for your reservation, be sure to use it before the end of the cruise.

Onboard credit can typically be used toward things like:

• specialty dining
• drinks or coffee
• spa services
• shore excursions
• onboard shopping
• arcade games or other activities

Any remaining onboard credit will be applied towards gratuities ($18.50/passenger/day), which are automatically charged to your credit card on file the last day.

Planning a Future Cruise Onboard

Many guests discover they enjoy cruising so much that they begin thinking about their next trip before the current one ends.

Royal Caribbean offers a NextCruise desk onboard, where guests can place a deposit on a future sailing and often receive additional promotional offers.

If you decide to do this, you can ask them to attach my agency number (305-677-2308) to the booking.

That allows me to continue assisting you after you return home — helping with stateroom selections, applying promotions, coordinating details, and often adding extra onboard credit when available.

You still receive the onboard promotions, plus the support of having a travel advisor on your reservation.

5) Exploring Ports

When exploring ports independently rather than through a ship excursion, it’s wise to return to the ship at least one hour before the posted all-aboard time.

The ship cannot delay departure for guests who return late.

6) Preparing for Departure Day

On the final evening of your cruise, your stateroom attendant will leave luggage tags and disembarkation instructions in your cabin.

Important reminder:
Do not pack passports or identification in checked luggage.

Guests can either:

  1. Check luggage the night before
Leave tagged luggage in the hallway, where crew members will collect it and deliver it to the terminal.

  2. Self-Assist Departure
Keep luggage with you and carry it off the ship in the morning.

You will also receive an email with your final onboard statement before leaving the ship.

Reviewing Your Onboard Charges

On the final day of your cruise, Royal Caribbean will send an email with a full invoice of your onboard purchases along with any gratuities charged to your account.

The credit card you placed on file during check-in will automatically be charged.

If anything looks incorrect or you have questions about a charge, it’s best to visit Guest Services before leaving the ship, as they can quickly review and resolve any concerns.

The Post-Cruise Survey

After your cruise, you will also receive a guest satisfaction survey from Royal Caribbean.

If you had exceptional service from your cabin attendant, wait staff, or other crew members, this is a wonderful opportunity to recognize them.

These reviews are extremely important to crew members and play a significant role in their performance evaluations, so they truly appreciate guests taking a few minutes to complete the survey.

Why Many Guests Attach Their Travel Advisor to Future Bookings

Many guests place a small NextCruise deposit while onboard and then attach their travel advisor afterward.

When I’m connected to your reservation, I can help with things like:

• monitoring price drops or promotions
• adjusting stateroom selections if better options become available
• helping coordinate excursions or special requests
• answering questions before your trip

When promotions allow, I can also add extra onboard credit for my clients.

It costs nothing extra but gives you someone to help manage the details before your next cruise.

Final Thoughts

Royal Caribbean cruises are designed to be relaxing, fun, and easy to navigate. A little preparation simply allows you to enjoy more of the experience.
